Background and Objective: Various periorbital rejuvenation techniques have been introduced over the last 3 decades. This study highlights important milestones in the evolution of periorbital rejuvenation surgery by identifying the 100 most-cited articles in this field. Material and Methods: The Web of Science citation index was used to identify the 100 most-cited articles concerning periorbital rejuvenation. Articles published in English from January 1989–April 2020 describing periorbital rejuvenation-related surgical techniques, facial aging, and anatomy were included. The terms “lower blepharoplasty”, “upper blepharoplasty”, “browlift”, “browplasty”, “endobrow lift”, “endoscopic brow”, “Foreheadplasty”, “lower eyelid anatomy”, “upper eyelid anatomy”, “forehead lift”, “eyelid rejuvenation”, “canthopexy”, “canthoplasty”, “eyelid fat pad”, “orbital fat pad”, “tear trough”, and “eyelid bags” were entered into the citation search. Web of Science Core Collection was the database used for the search. A manual review of the initial 159 studies was performed. Articles describing reconstructive or non-invasive techniques, injectable fillers, lasers, and neurotoxins were excluded. Of the 100 most-cited articles, the publication year, specialty journal, the corresponding author’s primary specialty, the focus of the article, the corresponding author’s country of residence, the type of study, and the level of evidence were analyzed. Results: The mean number of citations per article was 75 ± 42. There were more articles published from 1989–1999 (n = 53) than later decades. Most articles originated from the USA (n = 82) and were published in plastic surgery journals (n = 81). Plastic surgery was the primary specialty of the corresponding authors (n = 71), followed by oculoplastic surgery (n = 22). Most articles (n = 69) reported on surgical techniques. Of the clinical studies (n = 69), 45 (79%) provided level IV evidence. Conclusions: Of the 100 most-cited studies on periorbital rejuvenation, studies focusing on periorbital anatomy, aging, and surgical techniques comprised the most-cited publications. An anatomically based approach accounting for age-related changes in the periorbital structures is paramount in the field of contemporary periorbital rejuvenation.

The human face is composed of layers that play a role in facial appearance and aging. These layers are arranged in five lamellar components that are clearly defined in the scalp and range from superficial to deep, as follows: skin, subcutaneous tissue, the musculo-aponeurotic layer (superficial musculoaponeurotic system—SMAS), loose areolar tissue, and the deep fascia or periosteum. Facial rejuvenation is based on the manipulation and re-draping of these tissue layers as well as specific anatomic attachments including ligaments, adhesions, and septa.

Rejuvenation, a word originating from the Latin words “re” and “juvenis”, meaning “young again”, has always been a historic interest in various cultures and civilizations. The first historically reported procedures for periorbital rejuvenation date back to the first century and stem from Aulus Cornelius Celsus’s seventh book of his encyclopedia De Medicina Ovto Libri [1]. Later accounts of the cauterization of excess eyelid skin by Arabian surgeons were reported in the 10th century [2]. In the 17th century, Ambroise Pare [3] performed corrections of excess eyelid skin. In 1896, Fuchs [4] introduced the word “blepharochalasis” to describe the thin, wrinkled eyelids of a teenager. In 1924, Bourguet [5] described transconjunctival lower eyelid blepharoplasty. In 1931, Claoué [6] and Passot [7] described the removal of the bulging fat pad in the lower eyelid, which was previously described by Bourguet through a transconjunctival approach. In 1947, Pierce et al. [8] described a technique of excising the corrugator supercilii muscle to treat frowning in a teacher. This was followed by Bames [9] in 1957, who described a technique for skin ellipse excision directly above the brow and the complete resection of the corrugator supercilii muscle to correct brow ptosis and frowning, respectively. In the same decade, Castañares [10] published a landmark article in which he described the orbital fat pad compartments in detail. He based his new blepharoplasty technique on this anatomical description, which became the basis for modern blepharoplasty. Subsequent reports in the late 1960s and 1970s by Rhees [11], Loeb [12], and Furnas [13] described the excision of redundant orbicularis oculi muscle tissue and bulging fat pads, emphasizing the importance of conservative resection.

An in-depth understanding of the periorbital anatomy and corresponding sub-units is paramount when planning rejuvenation in this area [14, 15, 16]. As various rejuvenation techniques have been introduced over the last 3 decades and our understanding of periorbital anatomy and aging has evolved, we aim to highlight the important milestones in our understanding of periorbital aging and the anatomy and evolution of periorbital rejuvenation surgical techniques. The 100 most-cited articles on aesthetic periorbital surgery were identified and presented in chronological order to serve as a resource for surgeons and trainees. Current approaches to eyelid and eyebrow rejuvenation are also presented.

Citation index was used to identify the 100 most-cited articles related to the topic of periorbital rejuvenation. Articles that were published in the English language from January 1989 to April 2020 were included in the study. The last 3 decades were selected as the timeframe of our study to ensure that the articles included were fundamental yet relevant to current periorbital surgical techniques. The terms “lower blepharoplasty”, “upper blepharoplasty”, “browlift”, “browplasty”, “endobrow lift”, “endoscopic brow”, “Foreheadplasty”, “lower eyelid anatomy”, “upper eyelid anatomy”, “forehead lift”, “eyelid rejuvenation”, “canthopexy”, “canthoplasty”, “eyelid fat pad”, “orbital fat pad”, “tear trough”, and “eyelid bags” were used in the citation search. The Web of Science Core Collection database was used in the search. A manual review of the initial 159 studies identified was performed. Articles that described non-invasive techniques, injectable fillers, lasers, neurotoxins, or periorbital reconstructive surgery were excluded. Articles describing periorbital rejuvenation-related surgical techniques, facial aging, and anatomy were included. After identifying the articles meeting the inclusion criteria, the top 100 were chosen to be highlighted in this article (Figure 1). In addition to citation count, the articles were further categorized by publication year, publishing journal, corresponding author’s primary specialty, focus of article, corresponding author’s country of residence, type of study, and level of evidence. The level of evidence was determined based on the methods described by Sullivan et al. [17].

The initial search was limited to 159 articles. Then, the abstracts of the most-cited 159 articles were individually reviewed. The 100 most-cited articles on periorbital rejuvenation are listed in this study (Table 1). The 100 most-cited articles were published between 1989 and 2020, spanning a 30-year period. The mean number of citations per article was 75 (standard deviation—SD: 42). There was a higher prevalence of articles published between 1989 and 1999 (n = 53) than later decades (Figure 2). Most articles (81%) were published in plastic surgery journals, of which 78% were published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal (n = 63) and originated from the United States (n = 82, 82%) (Figure 3 and Figure 4). Plastic and reconstructive surgery was the primary specialty of the corresponding authors in 71% of articles (n = 71), followed by oculoplastic surgery (n = 22) (Figure 5).

BERKELEY SPRINGS — The Morgan Arts Council’s Ice House gallery show, “Our Voices: Perspectives of Women” is open through Sept. 8. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Our Voices” features a wide variety of female artists from near and far, who examine the lives of women through their art. Claudia Olivos from Santiago, Chile, uses her paintings to celebrate and honor the energy of the Divine Feminine; Padma Prasad Surapureddi from Chennai, India, paints narratives inspired by the Tamil tradition of Bhakthi poetry and the sculptures found in Shiva temples. Born in Bogota, Colombia, artist Julia Vallejo studied in Fredericksburg, Va., before completing artist residencies in Italy, Mexico, and the United States. She works primarily in painting and drawing using her bare hands and feet to apply different thicknesses of paint. Dr. Maria Balibrea Melero was born in Madrid, Spain and uses watercolors or oils to present marginal monsters and other realities on canvas.

Other artists from around the region showcase their paintings, mixed media, sculptures, illustrations and fabric art. Theresa Wells Stifel uses waste and vintage ephemera papers to create bold pieces. Jane Pettit is another mixed media artist and sculptor who uses glass, stone, ceramics and found objects such as broken dishes. Fabric artist Norma Jean Brooks creates baskets, bowls, and wall art. Abbie Chessler says her painting comes from a place of emotion and surrender relating to her experiences as a woman.

“I like my own work to tell stories, ” said Curator Marily Mojica. “The artists in this group are from different origins, social and economic backgrounds who create distinct art in dissimilar styles.”

She said she wanted to give these female artists a new platform to exhibit their work, but she’s the “struggling artist” in the bunch.

“We are diverse in many ways, ” she said. “Half of the women are married. Two are openly gay. Most are self-taught. Six hold art degrees. Four own their own businesses. Julia is from Bogota, Columbia. Nicole is half Native American and half Cuban. Maria is from Spain, and I am what’s referred to as Nuyorican, born in New York to Puerto Rican parents.”

One or two of the artists found her. She was approached by the curator of a chain of local restaurants who’d overheard her speak of wanting to do something for Women’s History Month. Mojica put out a call on Facebook and several friends responded. Two of the women in the show reached out to her as a result of that artist call.

She met Krissy Whiski and Padma Surapureddi individually at exhibits in which they participated. Surapureddi’s series was of a painting where she was recording her journey from India to America.

“I fell in love with the series because I myself was working on something similar. I was journaling in my paintings, ” she said. “Toward the end of the exhibit, Pad read some of her poetry and I was mesmerized. I approached her with the idea of doing a show called ‘Art With Words, ’ but it never materialized. In my opinion, her palette is sometimes dark, yet it has a lot of vibrancy.”

“The place was loud, crowded and yet her immediate surroundings were tranquil, ” Mojica said. “She was painting as if she was the only person in the room. She was in her own creative space, and I admired her ability to do that. I see her as a free spirit; she describes herself as a “bohemian surrealist” painter. I love Krissy’s palette and her whimsical presentation. It’s like paintings of life. Her work is very pop and yet authentically Krissy. Her paintings hold power over me.”

She discovered Keiona Clark, Juliana Vallejo, Lea Craigie Marshall, Jane Pettit, and Rachel Cross at Artomatic, a multimedia arts event held in the Washington, D.C. area.

“I think of Keiona as very brave, a self-taught artist who, as a result of surviving cancer, has produced a surprising amount of good work, ” she said. “Juliana is very good at painting on a large scale. I admire her skills and the ability of her paintings to demand attention. The scale speaks to you from a distance. I also adore Jane’s sculptures. Like Juliana’s work, Jane’s sculptures also command attention. I have loved every single piece I have seen her create…bold texture, vibrant colors and great assemblage. Artist Lea Craigie Marshall always surprises me. Her creativity shows in multiple ways. She creates in many different mediums: collage, painting, sculpture, installation. As for Rachel, she has an energy I respect. She’s a lover of all things: animals, the earth, people and art. This shows in her art. I met Marcie Wolf-Hubbard and her husband at their New Year’s Eve party five years ago and discovered her work and the method of encaustics. Marcie has illustrated for magazines and books, as well as worked as a courtroom illustrator. She teaches art for the aging. I picked Marcie for this exhibition because I love the fact that although she paints nudity, it is very tastefully done.”

She met Nicole Oxendine at a meeting for an organization for Latin artists. A year later she and Oxendine shared space at Artomatic and also exhibited at an event celebrating the life of the artist Frida Kahlo.

“She was a great addition to this show. Because although Nicole is also a painter, she decided to exhibit something different, her wonderful textile collages. Nicole and I had a conversation about her specific pieces in this show.

“Working through craft traditionally seen as ‘women’s work’ throughout Lumbee, Cuban and Celtic cultures, I enjoy deconstructing existing materials and frameworks to explore new possibilities, ” Nicole Oxendine said in a statement. “In these new formations, the intentionally light, loose weft combined with the layered, frayed warp, allowed to serve primarily as fringe, weave together to imagine new creative freedom and movement for my people.”

Proposed Gym Could Replace Bank In Palmyra

Mojica’s been an admirer of Theresa Wells Stifel’s work for a while, but she didn’t meet Stifel until the show opening in July.

“I love the diverse women in her art. They were a great addition to the show. Abbie Chessler returned to making art after many years of channeling her creative energy into her career as a museum exhibition designer. She is a printmaker, painter and has done some installation art. I worked with Abbie last year at an exhibit for a restaurant and was looking forward to working with her again. She seems to be inspired by nature. I met Elizabeth Levine Steel when I visited her studio for the first time during Open Studio night. She started painting after retirement. Immediately after speaking with her I thought, what a sweet woman. She was so inviting. I remember I was staring at her scarf collection, and she invited me in. Like Lea, Elizabeth is also multi-talented. She started her art career as a jewelry silversmith. She has been painting for six years now and her work is pretty incredible.” Mojica said she’s attracted to all of the arts: dance, visual, performance and fashion.

“I am inspired by everything…color, people, music, children, travel, other artists, flowers, etc. Although I hold an Associate Degree in Studio Art, I am self-taught. I began by making rag dolls to help with depression and to have something to do. In the late ‘90s, I moved from making jewelry to painting. I sometimes make or design my own clothes. Painting is very therapeutic for me. When I’m painting, I feel relaxed, almost trance-like.”

She said she’s not only a creative person but an emotional and an analytical person. “I am a colorist, a storyteller and a lover of esthetics. Art keeps me in tune with my emotions, with who I am. It also keeps me grounded and reminds me of my passion for beauty.”

“The stories are not always happy, ” she said, “but the colors are always cheerful. The colorist in me prefers bold, loud, dramatic colors. I use the power of color to evoke emotions and sometimes I create my own story, leaving it to the viewer’s imagination to interpret.”

Also opening at the Ice House in the Carr-Kelly Gallery and Hall of Dreams from July 26 to September 8 is the artwork of Neal Redmond, Maggie Banks, and Alison Young. Their works include paintings in acrylic and oil and graphic drawings.

Motivating yourself to exercise or finish a project can be difficult at the best of times, so, in our opinion, taking up a new hobby is a kinder and more fun way to go.

Discovering new ways to get creative and keep your mind busy might be the key to staying positive during these trying times.

If you’re yet to pick up a new pastime, there’s no better time than now. We suggest art; known for its therapeutic and stress-relieving qualities.

For artist Sasha Compton, art is a “form of therapy”. “It’s a means to escape everyday worries and to find the courage to try new things – and, as a result, learn from the mistakes, ” she says.

Similarly, Curtis Holder, winner of Sky Arts’s Portrait Artist of the Year, says that when he considered a career in art therapy it gave him an insight into the value of art as a way of relieving feelings of stress and anxiety.

“I would heartily recommend people trying creative things during this difficult time. You don't have to be an accomplished artist, you just need to tap into your creative spirit and enjoy trying something different, ” he said.

Owing to their versatility and the fact they dry quickly, acrylics are a popular choice that have been widely used by artists since the Sixties. They can be diluted and used as thinly or thickly as you require. Artist David Hockney was one of the first champions of acrylic paint, using it to create some of his best-known works.

If you’re looking to start, seascape artist Nina Brooke encourages anyone to “just give it a go”. “Don’t feel too restricted, ” she says. “Find something that inspires you – a place, an object, a walk, a memory, another artist – and start making some marks.

This Ai Powered Art App Lets You Paint Pictures With Words

“There are a lot of useful tutorials online about how to layer colours with acrylics, which might be helpful in getting to grips with how to use layers to give depth to an image. All my paintings start off with a very watered-down base layer using muted, earthy colours and I build up the painting from there adding colour and detail as I go.”

Brooke suggests starting small and experimenting with colours and various thicknesses of paint. “Don’t feel too restricted – it takes time to get used to the way the materials work. As daunting as the blank canvas can seem, it gets easier once you’ve made the first mark.”

As for which paints to reach for, she suggests this Golden fluid set (Cass Art, £39.95) since it offers a “great range of colours and the quality is fantastic”.

When it comes to what to paint on, Brooke tends to use pre-primed and stretched canvases, “which are easy to work with, particularly as they come in a huge range of sizes”. As a starting point, try this Hobbycraft white stretched A4 canvas (Hobbycraft, £3).

If you’re not ready to paint onto material straight away, Brooke suggests first working on paper, recommending this Fabriano artist paper pack (Cowling & Wilcox, £8.99) owing to its high-quality thickness.

Finally, “brushes are vital” stresses Brooke, who uses a range of sizes as well as trowels and palette knives to create different marks, remove layers and scratch into the surface of the painting. She recommends turning to Pro Arte’s hog brushes (Jackson’s Art, from £2.80) or Procryl brushes (Jackson’s Art, from £4.10) as both offer a large range of sizes.

The Painful Feeling That Connects Us: Artist Penny Siop

This is a very different type of paint to acrylic: watercolours are not as saturated, and also less messy to work with. Artist Sasha Compton is inspired by the female form, Grecian goddesses and celestial beings, and while she uses a variety of colours and textures, it’s her bright watercolours that caught our eye.

If you’re looking to start experimenting with watercolours, Compton – much like the other artists – encourages you to go for it. “The first stroke is the hardest and once you have started the process, the rest should flow naturally, ” she says. “There is no right and wrong.”

Compton recommends you invest in some nice paints. She uses these Winsor & Newton watercolours (Cass Art, £24.50) which contain 24 different hues ranging from dark green to bright yellow.

European Super League: New Tournament Launched To Replace Champions League With 60 80 Teams

“Have a play around with mark making first, to see which brushstrokes feel right to you, ” she says. “Find your inspiration, whether that is a physical object, a view, a memory, a feeling or a pattern, nature, colours or something else.” Compton tends to go on long walks where she takes photos, which she can work with at a later point for colour inspiration.

“When using a dry brush, the texture of the strokes shows clearly on this paper. If you are using standard watercolour paper, it’s important to stretch your paper before to avoid it ‘cockling’, or buckling when painting. You can find out how to do this online, ” says Compton.

As for brushes, she recommends reaching for these Cass Art synthetic brushes (Cass Art, £18.50) or these Foundation watercolour brushes (Winsor Newton, £9.73).

“Perhaps invest in a sketchbook (Cass Art, from £10.95) and try to do a painting a day to keep your eye, and confidence, in the game. Don’t expect for your first attempt to be exactly what you had in mind, but do try to enjoy the element of play, ” she advises.

Minimal and paired-back, it seems body-form line drawings are big news at the moment, perhaps owing to the trend for Matisse-inspired fashions and homeware.

If you’re looking to create line drawings of body forms, her tips are worth listening to. Stressing the value of practice, she notes that while it may sound obvious, “it really works!”

Man Files Complaint Accusing Youtube Of Harvesting Uk Children's Data

While life drawing classes aren’t currently possible, she suggests roping a live-in lover, friend or housemate to form three simple poses with their body for you to photograph – they don’t need to be nude, and if you live alone, she suggests taking photos of yourself.

“Study the shape of the body, how the limbs relate to the torso, the angles of the joints, and the lengths of the arms compared to the legs, for example. Then put pencil to paper – create simple blocky shapes for the limbs and torso to start with, using the images as a reference. Once you're happy with the rough shapes then join them using sketchy, sweeping strokes, keeping everything fluid and loose, ” advises Caton-Thick.

Practise drawing the three poses daily, sometimes quickly for a more abstract outcome and sometimes taking a bit more care and focusing on certain details for a more refined result.

The Defenders: Three Books On The Science Of Immunity

When it comes to the essentials you need, she suggests buying a small and portable sketchbook (Cass Art, from £9.95), either A5 or A4 in size, so it can easily fit in your bag. The more opportunities you have to draw the better, she says.

“This little bound sketchbook from Daler Rowney (Cass Art, from £9.95) is a very affordable option and the paper is decent enough quality to get you started, ” says Caton-Thick.

As for drawing implements, she suggests soft pencils (Cass Art, £9.95) and a proper rubber (Amazon, £2.99). But, most of all, she’s a big fan of drawing in pen and recommends you reach for these Uni-ball pin drawing pens (Ryman, £8.99).

The Body Shop

Coming in a pack of 12, the brand says these are suitable for amateurs and professionals alike, allowing for precise drawing with fade-proof, water-resistant ink. With various nib sizes, ranging from 0.1mm to 0.8mm, you can produce plenty of line widths.

As for her go-to ink, that’s Winsor & Newton’s calligraphy ink (Art Discount, £3.65) – “I find the viscosity perfect for this painting form. The price is good and there are so many gorgeous colours available, ” she says.

The angled point is ideal for detail while the flat end of the brush is good for wider brush strokes. “And that's it, that's all you need to begin!”

On The Impact Of Arts Council England's New Restitution Guidelines

Curtis Holder, who specialises in drawing on paper using graphite and colour pencils, recommends making a start by simply doodling while you’re talking to someone on the phone or watching television.

“As you're doodling, experiment by drawing different shapes, lines and patterns. This exercise will get you used to holding the pencil and getting a feel for what it does, ” he adds. This is a “great way of getting your brain ready for that mark-making process
